Safety on Boats
Posted on: 12/10/2009
It is fun to go out in a boat on a sunny day and feel the wind in your hair and look back at the harbour. But be prepared to listen to the forecast because the weather can change quickly to a rough, windy storm.

Responsible boat-users:
  • Know how to swim.
  • Wear a life-jacket – especially when the sea is rough.
  • Make sure the boat is seaworthy and will float.
  • Take out accident insurance – so that they can replace a lost boat and provide for their families.
  • Do not drink alcohol at sea.
  • Are properly trained.
  • Launch in a safe place – away from rocks and bathers.
  • Check the wind strength and direction before sailing.

Fishers lead a dangerous life.
Many fishers drown when their small boats capsize because they cannot swim and do not wear life jackets.

Mayday – a call for help.
Ships in danger fire rocket flares and call “mayday” on the radio.
